I first heard about Human Design through an Instagram post back in 2018. I was curious, so I looked up my HD chart online… and I was immediately confused, exited out of the browser tab, and didn’t think about it again.

Until the next summer, when Human Design popped up again for me. And then again, and again, and again.

Okay Universe, I get the message.

So I started watching Youtube videos explaining some of the basic concepts of Human Design, and within a single afternoon, I was hooked.

Now, it’s my biggest passion and obsession.

Which is why today I want to talk about what Human Design actually is and share some of the basic concepts in the Human Design system with you. If you were led to this post, chances are Human Design has been popping up for you, too — and I’m excited to help you dive deeper into your own unique Human Design and how to capitalize on it.

So What is Human Design?

If you want the technical answer, Human Design is a spiritual tool and system that combines principles from western astrology, the chakra system, and several other esoteric disciplines.

But more than that, Human Design is a blueprint of who you are. Who you were born to be, before the world told you who you “should” be.

To me, learning more and more about my unique Human Design chart (because every one’s is different) felt like remembering pieces of me that I’d forgotten, forsaken, or buried deep down inside of me.

Human Design gives insights into your natural gifts, strengths, and talents; how you best work; your energy levels and what energizes you; how you absorb energy from others; the best way for you to make aligned decisions; the purpose you’re here to carry out; and so, so much more.

It’s an incredibly complex system, but even understanding just the basics can be life-changing.

How to Get Your Human Design Chart

The first thing you‘ll want to do if you’re ready to explore your Human Design is pull up your chart. There are many websites where you can do this for free, but one of my favorites is this one.

To get your chart, you’ll need to enter your birth date, time you were born at, and the city/country you were born in (it will ask for your name, too, but that’s not used in the calculation of your chart).

When you submit that information, you’ll see a chart that looks something like this:

Confusing, right? Literally nothing about a Human Design chart is intuitive, which is kind of a bummer because if it was more intuitive, we probably wouldn’t lose as many people at this stage.

Don’t let all the shapes and colors and lines stress you out. Today we’re going to explore a few of the basic parts of your chart, which can all be found in the right-hand column where the text is. Specifically: Type, Strategy, and Authority.

Understanding the Basics of Human Design

1. Human Design Energy Type

Your Human Design Type is your unique energetic signature or aura. Type is the very first thing you’ll want to explore if you’re brand new to Human Design.

There are 5 Energy Types: Generator, Manifestor, Projector, Reflector, and Manifesting-Generator (note: some people consider this last one to be a hybrid-type of the Manifestor and Generator, instead of a standalone type).

2. Human Design Strategy

Each of the 5 Types has a corresponding Strategy, which is essentially a set of guidelines to follow that will decrease the resistance you experience in life, and help you manifest your desires more easily and in the most aligned way.

For example, the Projector Strategy is to “wait for the invitation” and is all about sharing their gifts and knowledge with others when invited in, either formally or energetically.

3. Human Design Authority

There are 7 Authorities in Human Design, and your Authority is like your inner GPS for making decisions that are correct for you (in business, relationships, life, etc.)

When you see your Authority listed on your chart, it’s going to say something like “splenic” or “sacral” — which makes zero sense without having prior knowledge of the Human Design system.

Thankfully, I’ve written an entire post breaking down all seven Human Design Authorities.

And there you have it, my friend! Those are 3 of the biggest HD concepts to explore as you begin learning about your own unique design! Think of them as the Golden Trio of Human Design 😉

I’m curious — let me know in a comment what your Human Design Type, Strategy, and Authority are!
