Ever read something about your Human Design and thought, “Wait… that doesn’t really sound like me?”
I recently had a conversation with a student who’s a Generator, but felt like Projector was a better fit for her. Why does this happen? Why do some people feel misaligned with their Human Design?
In this post, we’ll dive into four specific reasons why your Human Design (or your client’s) might not feel quite right.

Reason #1: Your Birth Time is Off
One major factor that can make your Human Design “wrong” is your birth time.
When generating your Bodygraph chart, your birth time is very important to the calculations—especially for the finer details like Variables, Line activations, Gates, and Channels. These things can change many times throughout the course of a single day.
If you’re unsure of your exact birth time, that could explain why certain parts of your chart don’t fully resonate with you.

Here’s a great example of this.
I recently found out that my dad is a Reflector, but before we found his exact birth time, I’d generated multiple different charts using his birthday but at different times of day (e.g., 2am, 8am, 12pm, etc).
Based on those charts, he could have been either a Reflector, a Projector, or a Generator. Three completely different Types!
Not sure of your birth time? Here are a few things you can try:
- Check a baby book or photo album. A lot of parents create photo albums or baby books with details about their child’s birth date and time.
- Ask your parents or guardians. They might remember or have written it down somewhere.
- Contact the hospital where you were born. Hospitals are becoming used to this request, and may even assume it’s for astrology or Human Design purposes. It might take some time, but you can often retrieve your exact birth time this way.
Reason #2: Different Types of Astrology
Another factor that can influence how you feel about your Human Design chart is the type of astrology used in generating it. Without diving too deep, let’s talk about two major types of astrology: Tropical Astrology and Sidereal Astrology.
Human Design typically relies on Tropical Astrology to determine the positions of planets and use that info to create your Bodygraph. However, certain tools (like Genetic Matrix) have tools for generating charts using Sidereal Astrology.
There are varied opinions on which system is more accurate, and some people find that one resonates more with them than the other. So if you don’t fully resonate with your design, check out Genetic Matrix to see your Human Design chart calculated with both types of astrology.

Reason #3: The Impacts of Conditioning
The third reason (and this is a big one!) is external and energetic conditioning. This is probably the most common reasons why parts of your Human Design feel off or “wrong”.
In Human Design, conditioning refers to the way the energies of those around us influence our own energy, and shape the beliefs we hold about ourselves. This could be conditioning from your past, such as from childhood, or even current conditioning stemming from people you spend a lot of time with.
Wherever we have openness in our design (like an an undefined Center, Gate, or Channel) we absorb and amplify energy from people near us who have those aspects defined in their chart.
For instance, I have an undefined Spleen. If I’m around someone with a defined Spleen, I feel an urge to be spontaneous, act in the moment, and make quick decisions, even though spontaneity isn’t a part of my design.
If you grew up with family members who had different Human Designs than you, you likely absorbed and amplified their energies many many times throughout your childhood.
To understand why certain aspects of your Human Design don’t resonate, ask yourself:
- How might I have been conditioned to believe certain things about myself that aren’t actually true?
- Am I following traits or behaviors that aren’t in my chart because I’ve been influenced by other people?
Reason #4: Traits Can Show Up in Multiple Ways
Certain gifts, traits, and challenges can appear in a variety of ways within the BodyGraph chart.
For example, let’s revisit the student I mentioned at the beginning of this post. She’s a Generator, but she resonated deeply with the characteristics of a Projector. When I reviewed her chart, I could see why ↓

First, this student has only two defined Centers out of nine, just like me. This means she doesn’t have consistent access to energy from most of the nine Centers, only the Spleen and Sacral.
She also only has one of the four Motor Centers defined, which might explain why she doesn’t feel like she has as much energy as most Generators do.
Her Spleen is super activated, with five out of seven Gates defined. This includes Gate 48 (the Gate of Depth) and Gate 57 (the Gate of Intuitive Clarity). These two Gates tell me she’s a very intuitive, insightful person—traits often associated with Projectors.
Finally, she has Gate 33 as her Unconscious Sun Gate, one of the most powerful energies in her design. Gate 33 is the Gate of Privacy, bringing a strong need for alone time to reflect and process her experiences. Yet again, a trait common to Projectors.
My point here is that different traits, gifts, and challenges can manifest in lots of different ways in the BodyGraph.
Projectors aren’t the only ones who are deep, wise, or insightful. Other Types can embody these characteristics too, depending on other pieces of their chart.
